Already making headlines in the Trinidad Guardian, Borokeete is off to a strong start this labor day.
Just a block away from the Breakfast Shed on Nostrand Avenue, Brooklyn, is legendary mas band, Borekeete USA. This year, its portrayal of Chutney Bacchanal is a tribute to the Indian community of T&T, and there’s already talk of it capturing the coveted Band of the Year Award.
President and designer Anthony Pollymore, who has lent his services to mas camps from Trinidad to St Croix, said of the portrayal: “This year, we thought it fitting to acknowledge the contribution that the Indians of T&T have made to the overall culture of our nation. Borekeete USA is a trailblazing organisation that has set the standard for mas bands in New York, having won numerous awards over the last decade. It has spawned other giants, such as Hawks and Sesame Fliers. Today, Borekeete USA has been eclipsed as the main player and continues to see members of its rank desert, only to form rival outfits.
Pollymore has taken this in stride. “Look, section leaders are given leeway and have a lot of influence, so it’s only natural that after a while they will tell themselves that they can start a band.” He finds some solace in what he calls “the unofficial Peoples Choice Award,” and states, “if we had the numbers like Sesame Flyers we coulda win. Everybody always says that after they see the bands on Monday,” referring to Labour Day.
Chutney Bacchanal is expected to be 700 strong, with each section highlighting an aspect of Indian culture and art. The Ganges, Divali, Phagwa, the Sun Goddess, and Sitar, are the names given to some of the sections. And unlike other bands, Borekeete USA’s kids’ section will complement the overriding theme of the adult portrayal.
In years past, Carnival along Eastern Parkway was serenaded by live bands and big name entertainers. Pollymore discusses that topic, evidently frustrated by “the crazy fees that artistes are asking for a few hours of work.” Soon, he was bearing his soul: “Last year, we were able to get Allison Hinds because her fee was paid for by Courts, who was opening its first store here in Brooklyn. That way they promoted their business. We can never afford Machel and other top performers.” According to Pollymore, fees for the elite entertainers could run as high as forty thousand US dollars for just about four hours of work. Despite the concerns he expressed, Pollymore hinted at this year’s entertainment. Let’s just say, it’s a big one! But more on that later.
Chutney Bacchanal’s mas is being skillfully constructed in the basement of Borekeete USA headquarters. This is the heart of the enterprise, where the art of wire-bending, cutting, sticking and the assembly of the costumes take place. In a way, this is a West Indian effort. Toni Bramble and Montgomery Fraser, who hail from St Vincent, were assiduously at work, ensuring the best product possible. They were soon joined by Pollymore, who shed some light on the work involved before that big day: “It’s no problem getting feathers and the gold and silver leatherette here in New York, but other colours like purple, red, and pink …we have to send for them from Trinidad. Same thing with the beads…gotta get it from home.” Things are shaping up here at Borekeete USA. Their supporters should take heart.

Borokeete Mas Band dislplayed a preview of their section ‘Chutney Bacchanal’ at the Imperial Night Club in Manhattan. If there is one thing about New York and the Labor day Carnival, is that masqueradres love their pretty costumes. The bright gold costume embroidered with sequence and tassels definitely looks like its going to bring the bacchanal.

Borokeete International Inc, formally known as Borokeete USA. was founded in 1987 in Brooklyn, NY. Borokeete’s mission is to continue with their initial goal of educating people and maintaining important Caribbean traditions. Over the past 21 years Borokeete has worked towards their goal by participating in as well as sponsoring many Caribbean cultural events. It is no wonder that this years theme is all about the history of its people. Borokeete’s 2008 theme for their band is Beauty of the Dark Continent. Beauty of the Dark Continent refers to the natural beauty that comes out of the continent of Africa.

Borokeete held their band pre launch on July 4th at Elements in New York. They teased those who attended with a little taste by showing two well designed costumes. This pre launch only left attendees wanting more and eagerly awaiting the full launch. There was so much anticipation behind Borokeete’s launch that it brought out well respected people from the Caribbean community. Jamaica’s own, reggae superstar Tony Matterhorn was one of the many noticable attendees. On July 5th Borokeete revealed the full 13 sections at Secrets in Brooklyn.

Each section was reflecting some aspect of African heritage. The atmosphere of the night was mythical and exotic forcing all in attendance, including myself, to drift away to an African safari with the sounds of pan and drums in the background. That night Borokeete USA, officially changed their name to Borokeete International Inc.

Each of the designers this year did a wonderful job at capturing all aspects of African beauty. The sections highlighted the beauty of the continent’s animals, flowers, natural gems, and most importantly its people. With sections such as Orchid of Paradise which celebrated Africa’s beautiful flowers.

The red costume had a head piece which would make any woman want to become a flower girl. Another fabulous section Safari, featured a bold tiger print and a tail to match which certainly requires a woman with a great deal confidence to pull off. Other sections included Jewel Birds Kenya which celebrated the colorful birds of East Africa.

After the ladies modeled the costumes on stage, those who attended were allowed to look at the costumes up close as the models walked around the venue. There were certainly two sections that received the most attention, Black Diamond and Empress of Africa. The name within itself, Black Diamond, initially attracted people and the black and white costume kept their attention. Empress of Africa displayed a blue and white costume that had three tall white extensions that were worn on the model’s upper back. To fit with the title of “Empress” this section will be leading Barokeete down Eastern Parkway at this year’s Labor Day Parade. Borokeete’s official sponsor is Courts Caribbean, A large Trinidadian furniture store. This Labor Day Parade, Courts will be participating with Borokeete on Eastern Parkway. They have bought out an entire section.

Borokeete International Inc., formerly known as Borokeete USA, is a Caribbean Carnival and Cultural organization founded in 1987 in Brooklyn, New York. Its purpose was to embrace and advance Caribbean heritage in the United States. Borokeete continues to educate people and keep important Caribbean traditions alive. It has participated in, as well as sponsored many Caribbean cultural affairs.

The West Indian-American Labor Day Carnival Parade is a spectacular cultural event held annually in Brooklyn, New York. In 2006 this one event brought in over 4 million domestic and international patrons to its famous parade route. Currently, the West Indian Labor Day carnival parade is ranked as the world’s largest carnival parade festival.

In the twenty two years of our existence, Borokeete International Inc. has grown exponentially and has always maintained a major presence at this very impressive parade. It has been awarded the prestigious title of Best Costume Band many times because of not only our enormous popularity and great audience anticipation but because of our ability to far surpass all other participants every year.

Last year their carnival presentation was Cibola Quest. That presentation won second place however, it was voted the people choice for band of the year title last year.
